{"id":129,"date":"2020-02-17T16:21:41","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T15:21:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/help.metashare.com\/metashare-help-faq-can-documents-in-metashare-follow-a-naming-standard\/"},"modified":"2025-10-13T16:24:44","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T14:24:44","slug":"can-documents-in-metashare-follow-a-naming-standard","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/help.metashare.com\/en\/metashare\/faq\/documents\/can-documents-in-metashare-follow-a-naming-standard\/","title":{"rendered":"Can documents in MetaShare follow a naming standard?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Some organizations want their documents&#8217; file names to automatically be set, depending on how they are tagged, e.g. that the first HR-related policy&#8217;s file name would be &#8220;policy-hr-001&#8221;, the second &#8220;policy-hr-002&#8221;, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is possible to set up rules that automatically set the documents&#8217; file names, based on business rules, but we do not recommend our clients to do this, as this would radically change the standard SharePoint behavior, having to maintain a custom solution that eventually might brake when new SharePoint updates are released by Microsoft. If documents have meaningful file name e.g. \u201cContoso&#8217;s Document Management Policy\u201d, you can directly understand the document&#8217;s content by reading its name, also making it easier to share documents, without needing to describe the documents\u2019 content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you however would like to be able to reference to a document&#8217;s ID, rather than it&#8217;s file name, there are several ways to do this.
